A great deal, is the long and short of it!
The centre is staffed and overheads are paid by Highland Council, but 99% of the exhibits and displays have been done by Clyne Heritage Society (mainly by Jacquie Aitken).
When the Centre first opened (around 1998), the first year was disastrous - locals were upset that it had been built there (it is not in a central location at all - being on the site of the former brickworks quarry)without any consultation with the community and there was very little in the centre to see. Visitor numbers were very low. The council approached the Society to become involved in a rescue bid, and we held a very successful exhibition in what became known as the Clyne Room. Visitor numbers went up and the centre now has become one of the best local museums in the north, with its friendly, helpful staff, its free admission and, most of all, its abundnace of local displays, which have been added to by the Society over the years. The centre now forms the showcase for much of the Society's possessions.
We managed to acquire some funding last year and the display cabinets and computer facilities were upgraded.
We pay no rent, but without the Society, the centre would be pretty bare!
It is closed from October to Easter, although the Society has access if required. _________________ Nick Lindsay
