I found a reference on the internet to a variety of turnip called Brora
http://www.gardenaction.co.uk/fruit_veg_diary/swede_brora.htm
Was this a joke played on us by someone from a neighbouring village?

I don't think so. I have seen the Brora swede seeds frequentlyfor sale on Ebay. Have no idea of their derivation though! _________________ Nick Lindsay
