I would like to find any information on the McKay family. My great - great grandparents Donald and Annabella (or Anabella) were married in th e Parish of Clyne in February 1852. Not long after that they immigrated to Australia. Annabella was born 10 August 1828 at Clyne. Her parents were Robert and Isobella McKay. Robert was a tailor according to Annabella's death certificate.

My daugther and I will be visiting Brora the weekend of 12-13 July. Are there any places that we could visit to find out more information about our family - cemeteries, museum, Library, members of the McKay family who still live in the area?
Hope someone is able to help.
Lyn

Hi Lyn,

I have Robert and Isobell also having two other children (Angus, 3rd May 1800 and Robert 20th March 1802). This is from the Old Parish Register. Robert (senior) was listed as a 'Taylor' but the 1802 entry also has him as 'now in 93', that is, he has enlisted into the 93rd Sutherland Highland Regiment. I have Annabella born on 8th August, 1827.

The family's residence is stated as 'Auldryrie', which is a stone's throw from where I live in West Clyne.

I have Donald (from West Clyne) and Annabella (from east Clyne) being married on 8th February, 1853.

Do you know who Donald’s parents were?

Nick

Hi Lyn
You would need to add a Friday to your visit.
To find the Library and Council Offices(Lair records) open.
A good web site for cemeteries and gravestones is Christine Stokes site.
www.countysutherland.co.uk
It shows pictures of gravestones cost about £5.
Have a great time in Brora. It's a lovely Place.
Take care
Ian

Thanks for all the information Nick and Ian. Very Happy
The dates you found, Nick, are close enough for us to be talking about the same people. I got the marriage information from my great grandfather's birth certificate and Annabella's birth information from an obituary and death certificate.

I haven't started on Donald yet. I was hoping that Annabella's death certificate would give me a date for when he died, and if he died in New Zealand or Austalia. There were an awful lot of Donald McKay's in New Zealand for the time period I am looking at!

Unfortunately we can not be in Brora on the Friday because my daughter will still be working, hence just the Saturday and Sunday.
This is all very exciting and I can't wait to come and see Clyne for myself.
Lyn
